Lead diggers in Operation Gopher Reproduced Photograph, 1947
A photograph reproduction on page 9 of Engineering Traditions. It depicts the lead diggers of Operation Gopher. From left to right, Dick Bailey, Tom Fairey, Charlie Anderson, Jerry Garnett, and Charlie Mills. The men pose next to their "mascot," Patrick Digger O'Dell. Operation Gopher was the first project of the Student Engineering Council; to dig themselves a hole. Deemed one of the most successful student projects, the team of young men grew to include over 3,000 students, who worked and donated equipment to build the only structure on the University Campus built entirely by students.
